What is training at the dojo like?



The dojo environment

Melbourne Aikido is a friendly, cooperative and respectful community of like minded practitioners. At the dojo, we emphasise the importance of camaraderie, friendship and assisting one another. Training partners are very much valued as without them, we cannot improve. Together as a team, we excel. 

The dojo holds on to the traditional Japanese dojo etiquette. Polite formalities such as bowing at the door, before stepping onto the mats and towrard training partners and instructors and apart of our culture. With humility, we remove the ego from training. 

It is a refreshing and complete space. We try to foster a tight bond on and off the mats. The dojo is like a second home to many.


What does an Aikido class consist of? 

Aikido classes are fun and energetic.
A regular consists of a quick 10-15 minute warm up and then the class material. 
In our warm ups, we incorporate cardio, strength and conditioning drills. Although Aikido is a softer martial art, we still equip our members with enough physical stimulation an exertion to strengthen the mind and body. 
An Aikido class consists of Weapons work, empty hand techniques and free-form Aikido.
The Weapons we practice with are the sword (iaito or bokken), tanto (wooden knife) and jo (wooden staff). 
Weapons work is an enriching experience, connecting us better to our sense of balance and sensitivity. 
Aikido also has a wide spectrum of empty-handed techniques. From joint locks to throws, you will slowly build up your repetoire of useful skills. 
With dedicated practice, an Aikido practitioner becomes very aware and responsive. Aikido becomes a moving meditation. 

How does the ranking system work?

Every 3 months, an Aikido grading is held. 

With sufficient practice, a practitioner is welcomed to attend and register for the grading. 

The grading system works down from 8th kyu to the Dan grades. 

All material you will require to successfully grade is covered in class and provided on your syllabus booklet.
